A New Tradition

After 36 years, the World Indoor Rowing Championships is moving from Boston, MA to Alexandria, VA. Moving the World IRC to Virginia in 2018 will provide opportunity for more people to participate in the race, and help build greater interest in the sport.

About Erg Sprints

Since 1986, Erg Sprints has grown into the largest juniors indoor rowing event – and the second largest indoor rowing competition – in the world. In 2017, TC Williams hosted over 1,800 athletes from 132 clubs who participated in juniors, open, masters, collegiate, and adaptive events. In 2018, it’s the new host of the World Indoor Rowing Championships.

Why is the World IRC moving from Boston?

Moving the World IRC to Virginia in 2018, and other new locations in the future, will provide opportunity for more people to participate in the race, and help build greater interest in the sport.

Why Alexandria, Virginia?

The City of Alexandria is on the south bank of the Potomac River across from Washington, D.C. Old Town Alexandria, which pre-dates Washington by 40 years, is a vibrant area of historic houses, hotels, shops, restaurants, museums, art and antique galleries.

I’ve raced Erg Sprints before. How will the World IRC be different?

Indoor racing will span two days, including the usual World IRC 2000m events along with traditional Erg Sprints events: marathon and half-marathon, 20-minute junior and 30-minute open/masters rows, 500 meter sprints, relays, parent/child and kids rows.

Where should I stay?

There are more than two dozen hotels in Alexandria. Find more information at www.VisitAlexandriaVA.com.
